Expanded Car Share Service a Great Move - Generation
Zero
Youth organisation Generation Zero has congratulated Wellington City Council and Newtown residents for their work to expand the city’s car share service with a new Cityhop car in Newtown.
The new car and parking space in the Wilson Street shopper’s car park adds to two existing Cityhop services in the CBD.
“Car sharing is a brilliant idea that has shown remarkable success overseas,” said Generation Zero spokesperson Paul Young.
“Evidence shows in well-operated car share schemes, between 9 and 13 vehicles are dropped by owners in the area for every shared vehicle put in place.
“Not only does that help cut the hundreds of millions of dollars leaving Wellington’s economy to pay for imported cars and oil, it’s huge for freeing up parking space for other more productive uses, such as cycleways and dedicated public-transport lanes.
“It’s about giving people choice - young people increasingly prefer to be car-free and just have access to the service on occasions when they do need a car.”
Generation Zero is advocating for WCC to investigate the roll out of a region-wide car sharing system with 50 percent or more electric vehicles, as part of the organisation’s newly launched ‘Fast Forward Wellington’ transport vision.
Mr Young: “One extra car in Newtown is a positive step but we’d love to see more ambition from the Council to make Wellington a leader in car sharing. The potential benefits for the city are huge.”
Generation Zero has been interviewing local council candidates to see where they stand on Fast Forward Wellington, and immediate steps including looking into the region-wide car sharing scheme with electric vehicles.
The results will be released as scorecards next Wednesday and promoted through Generation Zero’s website.
