Kiwi boy beats seasoned performers at Aussie Auction Champs, again!
Perth, Australia - 26 September 2013
Daniel Coulson (National Auction Manager for the Bayleys Realty Group) has once again won the Australasian Auction Championship. There was not a glass clink to be heard at last night’s cocktail event as the winner was announced. Selected from 18 contestants that went head-to-head in the heats, the five finalists on stage included Daniel (last year’s winner) and National New Zealand winner, Andrew North (Harcourts Cooper & Co Ltd). But Daniel pipped at the post once again.
As winner and runner-up in the New Zealand Nationals, North and Coulson packed their hammers in the weekend and headed off to Perth to take on the best auctioneers in the land. They had been relaxed and confident in the days leading up to the competition heats.
Locked up in a ‘holding area’ away from the stage they were unaware of the challenges to follow as each auctioneer was given the same property to auction and the same orchestrated bidding sequence to test their metal.
Devised bidding processes test the auctioneers’ aptitude, attention and ability to think on their feet. The quality of these auctions is truly exceptional; participants need to create momentum in the bidding while building rapport with the crowd. Both Daniel and Andrew put in superb performances and received rapturous applause from the Kiwi supporters and the Australians alike.
“It’s a fantastic event,” says REINZ CEO, Helen O’Sullivan. “It’s really entertaining as well as being hugely challenging. The combined Australasian champs have been a great way for us to support and promote excellence in the real estate arena. Without doubt, they have been an important catalyst in lifting the standard and professionalism of real estate auctioneers throughout both countries.”
At just 22 years old, Coulson was the youngest competitor to win the REINZ National Auctioneer Championships in 2012. He then went on to win the Australasian Auctioneering Championships two months later. A year later, sees another significant win over some very seasoned auctioneers.
New Zealand has now won 5 out of the last 6 events.
