Perfect conditions greet Canterbury Anglers
A fine, warm morning greeted Canterbury anglers on the opening day of the 2013/14 fresh water fishing season. And with river levels dropping after the weekend’s rain, conditions were near perfect on many Canterbury waterways.
“It is a little early to predict how the season will go, but with the mild late winter, it is shaping up to be a good one,” says Andrew Currie, Fish & Game’s South Island communications advisor.
“You never truly know what’s around the corner weather wise, so I totally recommend making the most of these early season conditions. The sea-run brown trout appear to be in good numbers along the eastern river mouths and the Lake Ellesmere tributaries are sure to be fishing well in the evenings.”
“With the season opening falling in the school holidays and the overhead conditions remaining favourable, this weekend would be a great time to get the family into the outdoors for a fishing trip,” adds Mr Currie.
North Canterbury Fish & Game is also providing plenty of opportunities for junior anglers over the first few months of the new season; the annual Take-a-kid-fishing day at The Groynes fishing lakes, October 13th, and a new high country event to be held at Lake Lyndon, December 8th. Thousands of salmon and trout will be released into these lakes for these events.
Please note the North Canterbury High Country lakes and their tributaries will remain closed until November 2nd, allowing the late spawning trout to recover before angling pressure rises. Anglers are also reminded to check the regulations booklet which accompanies their new season licence for opening dates and bag limits.
