Green Team lends a hand at Rotorua Recycling Centre

School holidays Green Team lends a hand at Rotorua Recycling Centre

Customers at the Rotorua Recycling Centre received lots of little helping hands from children today (3 October). The local youngsters were participating in Rotorua District Council’s Green Team school holiday programme

Seventeen youngsters on the holiday programme run by the council’s Rotorua Aquatic Centre spent the morning helping customers to unload their recyclables and distribute them to appropriate recycling bays, and helping staff to sort items at the centre’s Red Cross shop.

RDC solid waste manager, Tim Senington, said it was quite fitting that the children spent the morning participating at the recycling centre given Green Team activities are often based around 'Keeping Rotorua Beautiful' and environmental awareness.

“It’s amazing to see the students helping out in the community during their school holidays, and learning at the same time. The children were really interested in the recycling process and hearing about what happens to the material when it leaves the centre.”

Aquatic Centre operations manager, Andy Smith, said the Green Team holiday programme encourages children to be aware of their surroundings and to be responsible young citizens.

“We like to incorporate environmental activities into our programme, such as planting and recycling, adventure kayaking, and mountain biking at The Redwoods, so local kids will take pride in our city. Today’s activity complemented these goals while also doing something productive for the community.”
