Boom installed at Horopito
A boom has been installed in the Makotuku Stream at Horopito as incident response teams work to contain a diesel spill from the Turoa Ski Field at Tongariro National Park.
Horizons Regional Council incident controller Craig Grant says Horizons is currently working alongside Ruapehu District Council, the Department of Conservation and local Iwi to develop an action plan for longer-term mitigation and clean-up. This will guide any further action taken in the days to come.
An evaluation of current actions will be undertaken in the morning and further information will be released as it becomes available.
Consent holders along the Makotuku Stream and Mangawhero River have been contacted and advised to look for a rainbow sheen and strong smell to determine the presence of diesel in their water take. If either sign is present they are advised to use an alternative water source.
Ruapehu District Council has advised that Raetihi reticulated water supply will be shut down for at least 10 days and fresh water is available via a tanker situated at the Seddon Street Four Square.
People are advised to visit the Ruapehu District Council website www.ruapehudc.govt.nz for further information on water supply and ablutions.
