AK’s Top Restaurants Battle it Out in Parnell Waiters' Race
PRESS RELEASE
October 3rd, 2013
Auckland’s Top Restaurants to Battle it Out in Parnell Waiters’ Race
Some of New Zealand’s best restaurants including Non Solo Pizza, Antoine’s, Hammerheads and The Engine Room will go head to head armed with a waiter’s tray and glass of wine for the Parnell Waiters’ Race, a tradition that started 40 years ago, on Sunday October 6, 2013.
The waiters’ race is a “sport” that started in France over a century ago, and races are now organised in more than 50 countries around the world. The basic rules of the race are that waiters have to race as fast as possible holding a loaded tray without spilling its contents.
The Parnell Waiters’ Race was traditionally only open to Parnell hospitality staff but this year to celebrate 40 years since the race began, the gauntlet has been thrown down to “hospo” waiters outside of Parnell.
Thanks to the NZ Dining Guide, over $10,000
in prizes are up for grabs for the winning waiter who will
be judged on speed and spillage. The event will be MC’d by
“That Guy” Leigh Hart.
Contestants are required to
run in heats against other competitors from Parnell Road to
Heard Park with a waiter’s tray holding a bottle of wine
and a full glass of red, trying to spill as little as
possible.
The Waiters’ Race will take place between 2pm and 4pm on October 6th, and there will be live music and a carnival atmosphere with the public encouraged to come down and cheer on the contestants and indulge in some of the delectable food and wine Parnell hospitality has to offer.
