Many Roads Still Affected by Storm Around Ruapehu

Many Roads Still Affected by Storm Around Ruapehu

The passing weather bomb that caused widespread disruption around the Ruapehu district has left roading crews with a lot of clean-up work.

Ruapehu District Council (RDC) kept its Emergency Operating Centre and call centre staffed after-hours last night in case the further bad weather forecast created any additional issues.

RDC Chief Executive and Civil Defence Controller, Peter Till, said that fortunately the weather system that caused all the problems passed through fairly quickly and by early evening the rain had stopped and river levels had started to recede.

”Today staff and contractors are busy clearing roads and assessing any damage that may have been caused,” he said.

“Ruapehu residents are however being asked to continue to drive to the conditions and take extreme care on the district’s roads which sustained quite a bit of damage in areas.”

“Currently we have some 26 separate incidents affecting roads listed on our website www.ruapehudc.govt.nz covering everything from flooding, drop-outs, trees down and slips some of which are very big and will take some time to clear.”
“Roading contractors are going to be kept very busy for some time.”
Mr Till said that Council is asking residents to phone in any flooding, slips or other storm related issues affecting roads to their local Council office or call 0800 123 RDC (732).

“Information from local residents on the ground is invaluable at a time like this in assisting to ensure that we have the latest information listed for people to utilise.”
