Stowaway deported immediately on arrival in New Zealand

A man who attempted to enter New Zealand by stowing away on a container ship has been deported by Immigration New Zealand (INZ).

INZ’s Compliance Manager Natalie Gardiner says the man was a former employee of the shipping company and decided to stowaway after being unable to secure further employment.

“He was discovered en route by the ship’s master and the shipping company notified INZ of his presence on board,” says Ms Gardiner.

“INZ officers, along with colleagues from Customs and Police, met the boat on its arrival at Lyttleton on Friday last week. The stowaway was detained by Police and arrangements were made for him to depart on the first available flight.”

The stowaway departed at 11.55am on Saturday.

Ms Gardiner says that this case shows that stowing away is not a viable option for those seeking to enter New Zealand unlawfully.

“Their presence on board will be detected and notified to the appropriate authorities, and they will not be successful in entering New Zealand. Stowing away is a high-risk enterprise with no pay-off and it would be foolish to attempt it.”
