Mayor Sanson supports White Ribbon Campaign to end men’s violence against women
Today marks the launch of the 2013 White Ribbon Campaign and Waikato district Mayor Allan Sanson has joined other mayors around New Zealand taking the pledge ‘to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence towards women’.
Mayor Sanson says he’s proud to take part in the campaign, which is an international movement, and urges other men to take the pledge and play their part in ending this violence.
“Violence against women is unacceptable and it destroys lives, that is why I and many other mayors throughout New Zealand are putting our names on the White Ribbon pledge.”
Mayor Sanson says people need to recognise that violence is happening all throughout New Zealand and in our district, and as a community, we must take responsibility.
“Violence so often starts in the home and that makes it a community problem. Our Council has always taken violence seriously, and the White Ribbon Campaign is a chance to talk about the issues openly and honestly.”
Mr Sanson says every signature on the pledge helps.
“We can all influence those around us, and saving just one life, preventing just one woman from being hospitalised or one child from experiencing violence would make the campaign worthwhile.”
White ribbons will be available at all Waikato District Council offices and libraries free of charge, so pick one up and show your support for the campaign.
The White Ribbon Campaign brings together New Zealanders throughout the country in a united show of support to end violence against women. When men take the pledge, they are provided with resources to help them take action and change attitudes and behaviours.
The pledge can be taken online at www.whiteribbon.org.nz
