Fonterra Milk For Schools Welcomes Recycling Accreditation
Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited today welcomed the recycling product stewardship accreditation by Environment Minister Amy Adams for the Fonterra Milk for Schools programme.
The accreditation recognises Fonterra Milk for Schools’ commitment to effectively managing used packaging and the benefits the programme’s environmental education component provides schools and their communities.
Fonterra Director of Global Sustainability and Social Responsibility, Carly Robinson, said: “When we developed the Fonterra Milk for Schools concept, an important element was making sure that we could have in place an effective recycling programme.
“All schools that sign up to the programme are provided with a recycling bin, bin liners, and a free collection service from Fonterra to ensure all milk packs are recycled.
“It’s not just about providing the recycling service – it’s also about educating Kiwi kids on the importance of recycling. To do this, we have created recycling guideline packs, a recycling video, and have had representatives visit each school to ensure they understand the programme.”
All packaging that is collected by Fonterra is brought back to one of its sites to be baled and then sent to international recycling facilities to complete the recycling process. There the milk packs are made into roof tiles, books and paper.
“There are currently no facilities in New Zealand that have the ability to recycle this type of packaging, making the facilities in Malaysia and Thailand the closest and most eco-efficient process to recycle the packaging,” says Ms Robinson.
Almost 7000 recycling bins have been made so far by New Zealand manufacturer Sulo-Talbot for Fonterra Milk for Schools, which is providing discounted bins made of up to 60 per cent recycled milk bottles for the programme which is now in more than 1000 schools nationwide.
Fonterra Milk for Schools is the tenth product stewardship scheme to be accredited in New Zealand under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008. For more information on product stewardship, go to: http://www.mfe.govt.nz/issues/waste/product-stewardship/index.html
