Tamaki Drive – Auckland Transport Statement

Auckland Transport has released the following statement in response to Coroner Gordon Matenga’s inquest into the November 2010 death of Ms Jane Bishop on Tamaki Drive.

“Auckland Transport firstly wishes to once again express its deepest condolences and sympathy to Jane Bishop’s family and wide circle of friends.

This tragic accident occurred within days of Auckland Transport being established, in November 2010. Auckland Transport moved quickly to remove car parking immediately after the accident in an attempt to reduce the risk of cyclists and motorists colliding on or near the corner in question.

Since then a number of other safety improvements have been implemented, including improved cycle lanes. Raised speed tables to reduce vehicle speeds have also been installed.

Auckland Transport is fully committed to improving safety for all road users and accepts the Coroner’s findings that the road layout was not the primary cause of this tragedy, but was a contributing factor.”
