EPMU stands with Pike River families on third anniversary

The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union will be represented today at a memorial service in Blackball marking three years since the Pike River mine disaster claimed the lives of 29 men.

The Australian miners’ union, the CFMEU, will send two representatives to attend and pay their respects.

EPMU assistant national secretary Ged O’Connell will attend the service, and says:

“We are proud to again stand with the families of the Pike River miners on this sad day.

“We have come a long way since the disaster.  Efforts are now underway to re-enter the mine, and the government is fully implementing the recommendations of the Royal Commission to make miners safer.

“It is however a sad day of mourning for the families of the men who never came home.”
