A recent Neighbourhood Support workshop reinforced the need for all residents to take a greater interest in what is happening in their neighbourhood.

The workshop attracted Neighbourhood Support Group Co-ordinators from both Hastings and Napier. Guest speakers included Rebeckah Hunt, co-ordinator for Live HB, Detective John McCarthy from the Police Family Violence Team and Community Constable Jason Bryant

The workshop was opened by Police Commander Tania Kura. She says "I was very impressed to see the Hastings and Napier neighbourhood support groups combine for the information sharing morning. This was a valuable opportunity for Police and others to reinforce crime prevention messages.”

Tania Kura says “Police recognise that we need the community to help us with safety by looking out for each other, reporting suspicious activity at the time it happens as well as caring enough to check on those who are a little more vulnerable than others.”

Other speakers included Hastings District Council Team Leader Environmental Health and Liquor Licensing Tony Stothart, who explained aspects of noise control in the neighbourhood and how to report concerns. Council’s Team Leader Emergency Management Trevor Mitchell, reinforced the message that well-connected communities are resilient communities and detailed some of the positive messages that have come from experiences gained in the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake.
