CarFit Programme improves safety of senior drivers
A training workshop at Petone Working Mens Club on Tuesday 26 November will introduce the CarFit programme to Hutt City.
CarFit is a practical approach to road safety for older drivers and is designed to help them make adjustments in their own car to find their safest fit.
There is a 12-point check that takes around 20 minutes to complete and is carried out by volunteers free of charge.
“Research shows that older people are more likely to drive with safety in mind. They’re more likely to wear their safety belts and less likely to speed or to drink and drive. But unfortunately if they’re in a crash they’re likely to be seriously injured because they are more frail. The need to prevent serious injury is what CarFit is all about,” says Jan Simmons, Road safety coordinator.
“With age vision also deteriorates and it is important to minimise blind spots, especially if a driver has reduced mobility in their neck. The checks help people adjust their seating position and all three mirrors, rather than just concentrating on the driver’s side mirror.
With the new group of trained volunteers established, the plan is to run approximately four events per year in Lower Hutt.
CarFit is a joint
project involving Hutt City Council, occupational therapists
from Hutt Valley District Health Board, AA, Community
Police, and
volunteers.
