One week left to apply for youth
council
ROTORUA 25.11.13: Local teenagers interested in applying to be a Rotorua District Youth Councillor for 2014 only have until Monday (2 December) to get their applications in.
The youth council meets fortnightly to discuss current youth issues, learn about local government and decision-making, get involved in the community, and help give Rotorua youth a voice. Youth councillors also support and organise youth events and activities, and participate in various local and national initiatives.
Rotorua District Council youth projects officer Jill Campbell said submissions for the 2014 youth council had been slow to date and she hoped more young people would put their names forward before next week’s closing date.
“The 2014 youth council is going to have a lot more interaction with the mayor and councillors. We’re fortunate to have former youth councillor and recently district councillor Tania Tapsell with a genuine interest in having the youth voice heard.”
Mrs Campbell says youth councillors are expected to be able to problem-solve, work well in a team, have a keen interest in civic duty, be prepared to discuss issues affecting Rotorua’s young people, be good listeners and have a network of peers to share information with. She said they also have a lot of fun at the same time.
Rotorua District Youth Council will meet every second Tuesday during 2014, as well as attend initial training from 7 to 9 February.
Last day for applications is 2 December at 5pm. Fourteen youth councillors will be selected.
