Fivefold increase in swimmers using ‘new’ McKenzie Baths

HUTT CITY COUNCIL NEWS RELEASE

26 NOVEMBER 2013

Fivefold increase in swimmers using ‘new’ McKenzie Baths

More than 5,000 swimmers have been to the redeveloped McKenzie Baths in Petone in the week since it opened. The 2011 and 2010 swimming seasons saw an average of 1,000 swimmers during their opening week.

McKenzie Baths re-opened on Saturday 16 November following a $2.3 million dollar redevelopment. It was closed during the 2012 swimming season.

“The huge increase in numbers has been a combination of the community wanting to see what the new Baths have to offer and the hot weather,” said Stephen Keatley, Community Facilities Manager.

“The staff on duty at the Baths have done a fantastic job in some very busy situations and we thank the public for their patience during these early days of operation.”

Staff have received a lot of positive feedback on the redeveloped baths with a lot of suggestions and comments for improvement being received and acted upon. One of the biggest suggestions is around shade.

“We’re expecting the shade sails we’ve ordered for the toddlers’ pool to be installed by early December. Staff have been watching how people use the Baths with the intention to add more shade in the New Year.”
