Ice forecast for Town Basin this summer

Media Release

2 December 2013

Ice forecast for Town Basin this summer

Looking forward to cooling off on those scorching days of summer ahead?

Never before will you have been able to do it quite like this in Whangarei – by visiting the Town Basin Ice Rink for a few hours of cool fun.

The rink, operated by Ice World, will be open from 10am to 10pm every day from 20 December to 26 January , except for Christmas Day.

“This is the first time an ice skating rink has been brought to Whangarei and we expect it to be an enormous hit,” said Venues and Events Marketing and Events Manager Rachel O’Gorman.

Venues and Events were keen to have the ice rink as part of the Endless Summer Festival.

The operator, Ice world,  has taken the rink to Porirua, Christchurch, Wellington, Rotorua, Palmerston North, Nelson, Tauranga, Hamilton, Auckland, and attracted 25,000 people to its rinks in Tauranga and Nelson last year.

The rink will hold about 30,000ltr of water frozen into a 30 metre by 16 metre ice rink, all under a  fully covered marquee.

“The great thing about that is that it can operate rain or shine, people don’t need to worry about sunburn or getting soaked by the elements,” Mrs O’Gorman said.

Prices are $20 for adults, $15 for children and $50 for families.  The cover price includes skate hire and there is no time limit on skate session (but once you leave you can not come back in on the same ticket)

The Town Basin Ice Rink will bring a number of full time and part time jobs with it including: Rink assistants, cash handling, customer service, first aid, manual ice grooming, behaviour monitoring/security and general maintenance/cleaning. A first aid certificate or ice skating experience is an advantage, but not essential. Details and how to apply are on line www.sjs.co.nz/job/103095365.

“It’s going to be a memorable summer for lots of people, and who knows where an experience like this might lead?” said Mrs O’Gorman.
