Anglers home in on Rotorua streams

Popular streams that re-opened to anglers on Sunday included the Waiteti and Utuhina, which had been closed over the spawning season. Fish & Game Officer Matt Osborne says the fish are of better size and condition than the previous opening, thanks to having lots of smelt to eat in Lake Rotorua. Some big brown trout had already made their way up the Ngongotaha Stream and fish of 2kg to 2.5kg caught, along with a rainbow weighing in over 3kg.

Mr Osborne says that anglers getting out early had done the best, as some fish had “gone to ground” to avoid the bright sunlight, and the sudden angling activity. The opening had not been overly busy, leaving plenty of room to fish the streams. Some anglers have already made their way towards stream mouths such as the Awahou, where fish congregate in search of cooler water.

Mr Osborne says Fish & Game is pleased to see from licence and other checks, that anglers are sticking to the rules but he says they’re urged to check their regulations for a refresher on “what they can do – and where.” Anglers are also reminded of the CCD message – check, clean and dry fishing gear to prevent the spread of plant and fish pests.
