Unison Announced as International Hockey Turf Naming Sponsor
Monday, 2 December 2013 – Hawke’s Bay electricity distributor, Unison Networks Limited, has been announced as the naming sponsor of the international hockey turf currently under construction at the Hawke’s Bay Regional Sports Park.
In making the announcement at a special event held at the Sports Park on Monday evening, Unison Group Chief Executive Ken Sutherland said the Company believed the Unison Hockey Stadium at the Sports Park would enhance what was already a great asset to the region.
“This facility will offer dual benefits to our community. In addition to providing a long-term asset to Hawke’s Bay Hockey, which continues to grow participation in the sport, the Unison Hockey Stadium will provide our region with a platform for securing international tournaments that will deliver economic benefits.
“Securing an international tournament will bring visitors to our region, providing the opportunity to showcase our region to national and international audiences, thus making it a strategic asset in the long-term economic growth of Hawke’s Bay.”
While Hastings District and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council support had been key in getting the project approved, Sports Park Trust Chairman Lawrence Yule said the 10-year sponsorship agreement with Unison ensured the viability of the project.
"We have worked closely with Unison on a number of projects for the long-term benefit of Hastings and the wider region, and we’re thrilled they have come on board to support the development of the international hockey turf.
“Unison’s support ensures we can deliver on such an important asset for our region.”
Mr Yule said securing the international women’s hockey tournament was a major coup for the region.
“The tournament, which is part of the Hawke’s Bay Festival of Hockey, will be the first ever on-going international tournament to be hosted in Hawke's Bay. Teams confirmed to date include Australia, Argentina, Korea and China, with one further team to be announced.
“We are delighted Unison’s support of the hockey stadium has made it all possible.”
Construction has already begun, with works scheduled for completion on 7 March 2014, one month before the tournament commences on 5 April.
