Sustainable forestry harvesting underway on Queenstown Hill
Sustainable forestry harvesting is underway on Queenstown Hill.
Some of New Zealand’s fastest maturing Douglas fir trees grow on the hill, which is also a popular recreation area for a wide range of activities.
In September QLDC began a sustainable logging operation, which is due to continue until the end of February.
Felling has begun above Vancouver Drive and in the New Year selective logging will be carried out on the front face of Queenstown Hill. Trees are also going to be removed from above the Goldfield Heights water tanks later in the year.
The area above Goldfield Heights will be replanted with a strip of native trees behind residential properties and non-wilding exotic (redwoods Sequoia) behind the natives the following winter.
Forestry contractors will take a break over Christmas and New Year, with work due to recommence on 6 January, depending on the weather.
