SkyPath landings revealed

Project Director Bevan Woodward says: "We are very pleased with the reception from Councilors, as we have worked hard to find an optimal solution for each end of SkyPath. These draft designs reflect an immense amount of work given the wide range of criteria and challenges that we needed to address.

Westhaven Landing

The Westhaven landing has been developed after feedback from the Westhaven Marina Users Association, Waterfront Auckland and NZTA. We believe it provides very good integration with the Westhaven Promenade - currently under construction - and the local connecting streets of Shelly Beach Road and Curran Street. We were mindful of the local stakeholders’ requests to stay away from the marina and busy roundabout at Westhaven.

At Northcote Point we have developed a landing that is directed away from the residential properties. The landing faces out onto Stokes Point reserve and provides a direct access to Northcote Ferry that avoids the residential properties. It also provides good connections to Princes St and the SeaPath route to Shoal Bay and Takapuna. The SeaPath route was developed at the request of the Northcote Residents Association for a direct and dedicated northern pathway connection. We also have the opportunity to add further screening to ensure privacy of residents."

Northcote Point

Design team co-ordinator Garth Falconer of Reset Urban Design says: "The SkyPath design team consists of engineers, transport planners, resource consent advisors, artists, iwi representation and urban designers. Over the past few months we have met weekly to optimize the SkyPath design.

Our team has included the young artist and architect Martin Leung Wai from south Auckland who with guidance from our Iwi representative, has developed the concepts of a waharoa gateway at the plaza and a carved mast as a landmark which relates to the Waitemata’s rich history of waka and yachting.

Artist Caroline Robinson has been working on a concept to transform the Skypath's Northcote Point landing into a sculptural passageway that weaves web-like through the road bridge structure and touches down onto a carved rammed earth bund.

In the New Year we will engage closely with local residents and key stakeholders. We will then finalise the design ready for lodging the resource consent application in late March 2014."
