48 whales are currently stranded at Triangle Flat near the base of Farewell Spit.

The whales began to re-strand there shortly before 4.30pm yesterday after having swum at sea for several hours following their being refloated early in the afternoon by DOC rangers, Project Jonah volunteers and other helpers.

The stranded whales where cared for until dark by around 40 volunteers, from Project Jonah and others, and DOC rangers. It is unsafe to attempt to refloat whales in darkness.

It is expected the whales will refloat in the incoming tide and may move.
