Biodiesel initiative good progress, says Capital’s Mayor

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown has today welcomed the announcement by Z Energy of its plans to invest $21 million in a domestic biodiesel manufacturing plant.

Mayor Wade-Brown says the announcement heralds a reduction in our reliance on fossil fuels and will help New Zealand address climate change concerns

Z Energy, which is headquartered in Wellington, says it aims to produce 20 million litres of sustainable biodiesel each year from tallow, using about 10 per cent of the country’s inedible tallow production.

“Cities, countries and corporates all have a role to play in ensuring the world addresses very real climate change concerns,” says the Mayor.

“It’s great to see local company Z Energy leading new energy sources and developing a green economy for New Zealand.

“In light of the recent IPCC report, on the severity and costs of adaptation to climate change, we need to support innovation from Z and others in the business community toward a low-carbon future for New Zealand.

“In addition to having more efficient vehicles on the road, fuel switching to bio-fuels, hybrids and electric vehicles will be essential to help us achieve the emissions cuts recommended by the IPCC.

“As production expands, we will take opportunities to work with Z on Wellington’s future fuel picture, including the civic fleet and Wellington’s bus network,” she said.
