Sponsors and former councillors sought for 50th anniversary celebrations

The hunt is on for sponsors and former Whangarei District councillors wishing to participate in the city’s 50th anniversary celebrations on 1 November, and Mayor Sheryl Mai hopes locals can help.

To date, the Grand Parade which travels the length of Walton St from 10am on 1 November, has attracted 68 float registrations and 135 classic and vintage cars.

“That’s bigger than we ever imagined and I’m delighted so many organisations want to be part of this important occasion for our city,” Mayor Mai says.

“The Parade and the city party that follows at the Town Basin are anticipated to attract many thousands of residents as well as visitors attending the Four Nations Kiwis vs Toa Samoa rugby league match at Toll Stadium in the afternoon, so it’s going to be a day to remember.”

To make the event even more memorable, Mayor Mai wants to hear from any local business wishing to sponsor a prize.

“Michael Hill Jeweller has already offered a diamond and ceramic watch for the best 60’s dressed woman from the crowd, and we’d love to hear from other businesses wanting to contribute prizes for the best 60’s dressed man and child, and the best float and runner-up best float.

“That could be gift vouchers, service vouchers or goods such as the watch from Michael Hill.

“We’ll name the prize after the sponsor, promote their contribution and give them an opportunity to say a few words at the prize presentation if they wish.”

Mayor Mai is also seeking former Whangarei District councillors wishing to be part of the morning’s festivities.

“These people made a significant contribution to our city over the last 50 years and we want to acknowledge them,” Mayor Mai says.

“We’ve invited as many as we have contact addresses for, but would appreciate hearing from those with whom we have lost contact, or someone who knows how to get in touch with them.”

“The 50th anniversary Grand Parade and Party together with the Kiwis vs Toa Samoa rugby league match are set to make 1 November one of the most spectacular days Whangarei has seen since November 1964,” Mayor Mai says.

“With this assistance from our community we can create a day to celebrate and be proud of for another 50 years to come.”
