Make Your Mark in Palmerston North

17 October 2014

MAKE YOUR MARK IN PALMERSTON NORTH

If you’ve always wanted to get involved in transforming public space; be it your local street, the space outside your storefront or a public area in need of brightening up, placemaking can help.

Residents and retailers are encouraged to form a team and sign up for the next phase of Placemaking Palmerston North.

“The great thing about placemaking is that the power is in the placemaker’s hands” says Jennifer Esterman, policy planner (urban design). “You get to choose where you’d like to work, you make the decisions about what you’d like to see in your space, and you’re only limited by your imagination.”

Previous successful placemaking projects include the parent’s shelter across the road from College Street Normal School, the development of ‘Little Cuba’ on Cuba Street and the ongoing work to liven up Broadway Avenue.

“There’s a great example of the spirit of placemaking in Broadway Avenue,” says Jennifer. “Residents and retailers now have the opportunity to try it for themselves. It doesn’t have to be a big project; a number of small projects can have a big impact collectively.”

Applications to join are now open, and close on Friday 31 October. Successful applicants will receive advice and a DIY kit and there’ll be an informative launch ceremony in early November.
