Ideas Shop to open in Rotorua’s inner city

Ideas Shop to open in Rotorua’s inner city

A pop-up shop opening in the inner city for two months will give residents a chance to share their ideas for Rotorua.

The Ideas Shop is a Rotorua District Council initiative which will be open from Saturday, 1 November 2014 until 10 January 2015 in Tutanekai Street, near the City Focus.

Locals can visit the shop to find out about some of the work being done towards achieving Rotorua’s short and long-term goals including what’s happening in the creative, inner city revitalisation, sustainable living and sport and recreation portfolios.

There will also be information about the WoodFirst initiative and SmartFutures, a one-stop source of information and data about Rotorua that will be used in future decision-making.

Members of the community are invited to submit their thoughts, feedback and ideas which will be collected, collated and assessed. The feedback and ideas will be used to help in the development of projects, as well as with the strategies that sit behind them. Ideas that show promise in achieving the Rotorua priorities and long-term goals set by the community and Council will be considered for implementation.

The Ideas Shop is also a chance for people to chat to Councillors and Council staff and check out Council documentation and information relating to the portfolios, WoodFirst, SmartFutures and the 2016 priorities and Rotorua 2030 vision.

“Councillors have committed to engaging with the community, ensure that what Council does aligns with the district’s ambitions and try new things,” Inner City Revitalisation portfolio support councillor Peter Bentley said.

“This pop-up shop is another way for us to get close to the community, find out what they want and need and find out what ideas they have and how we might be able to fit those into future decisions and what we’re already doing.”

Cr Bentley said Rotorua residents were keen to have their say when councillors took to the streets to gather locals’ thoughts and ideas to help develop priorities, goals and a vision for the district.

“We hope they’ll be equally keen to have input this time.

“The Ideas Shop will be a chance for people to have their say, share an idea, sit and have a chat about what’s on their mind and provide feedback,” he said.
