Room 24 does it again for Kiwi conservation!
Rotorua, 31 October 2014: Lynmore Primary School's Room 24 has done it again for Kiwi Conservation. Every year for the past four years teacher Gaylene Faulkner's new entrant class has sold popcorn and handmade cards to raise money to sponsor a kiwi hatched at Rainbow Springs' Kiwi Encounter.
And this year it's no different with their fundraising efforts for Kiwi conservation raising $371 to sponsor little Meccanno. The chick hatched on 8 October and is from the Whirinaki forest.
The 5-year-olds sponsored a chick called Meccanno, named because his egg code was 'toi' similarly the chick's sibling has been named Lego.
A lot of the Room 24 kids have Annual Passes for Rainbow Springs and will pop in from time to time to check on the progress of their little kiwi. Their contribution to kiwi conservation is a valuable one as Kiwi Encounter relies on donations and kiwi chick sponsorship to ensure its fantastic work continues.
Rainbow Springs plays a crucial role in kiwi conservation and breeding as New Zealand’s largest and most successful kiwi hatching centre where it raises kiwi chicks to a "stoat-proof" weight of 1kg before releasing them into the wild. Rainbow Springs has hatched and nurtured over 1350 eggs since 1995 when it first became involved in the Save the Kiwi recovery programme.
