Children's Safety Top Priority With New Road Safety Measures

Papakowhai children will find the trip to and from school a lot safer with the introduction of new parking restrictions approved by Te Komiti today.

The parking restrictions complement a Kea Crossing being introduced to help Papakowhai School children navigate across Tweed Rd before and after school.

The Traffic Bylaw changes approved today will also see parking restrictions introduced at Takapuwahia to help keep a busy intersection flowing smoothly, and to create a permanent 10min parking zone alongside a popular Lyttelton Ave coffee cart in Porirua’s CBD.

“These changes make good road safety sense, particularly for the children of Papakowhai School, says Te Komiti Chair Euon Murrell. “The changes mean the new Kea Crossing will be easily seen by vehicles and pedestrians at the busy times before and after school.”

At Takapuwahia the new parking restrictions will help keep Te Hiko St and the main roundabout flowing smoothly when the Marae gets busy. In the past, traffic has parked so close to the roundabout that buses and large vehicles have been unable to get past, says Cr Murrell. “These changes should keep the buses running on time.”

At Papakowhai the new parking areas will be highlighted by blue road markings and will involve:

· No Stopping - 8.30am - 9.15am & 2.45pm - 3.30pm, school days only, on the western side of Tweed Rd south of the bus stop outside No 22 to the intersection with Naver Place,
· No Stopping - 8.30am - 9.15am & 2.45pm - 3.30pm, school days only, on the eastern side of Tweed Rd north from 5.5m north of the boundary between No’s 7&9 to the intersection with Findhorn Place.
· No Stopping – at all times on the western side of Tweed Rd north of No 22 for 28m,
· No Stopping – at all times on the eastern side of Tweed Rd north of the parking bay adjacent to No 11, to a point 5.5m north of the boundary between No’s 7&9.

The No-Stopping parking restrictions in Spey Place before and after school remain and have been extended slightly in the morning to cover the time between 8.30am & 9.15am.
