Council consults on preferred option for flood protection

Christchurch City Council opens consultation on its preferred option to reduce the risk of flooding in the Flockton area on Monday.

Preferred Option 2 is expected to reduce the frequency and severity of flooding in the Flockton area, benefiting at least 585 properties. It will return most of the Dudley Creek catchment to the same level of flood risk, or slightly better, than before the Canterbury Earthquakes.

"We genuinely want to hear what Christchurch residents have to say as this is a very important project both for the Council and for communities. People's feedback will inform decisions about where work to protect against flooding takes place and what this work looks like," says General Manager Infrastructure Rebuild John Mackie.

The Council is looking at naturalised banks, where possible, as an alternative to engineered walls. We would like to know if residents support this approach. Naturalised banks are visually appealing, with plants that fit a creek and stream environment, but they need more land than engineered solutions.

After considering residents' feedback, alongside technical advice, the Council expects to make a final decision on 11 December 2014.

Construction work could get underway in April 2015 on part of the scheme, with the rest completed within two years. A significant amount of work has already been completed in the Flockton area this year through the Mayoral Flood Taskforce.

The consultation booklet is available to view from Monday 10 November 2014 in any of the Council's libraries and service centres. It is also available online at www.ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay<http://www.ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay>. The final date for written comments is 5pm on Wednesday 26 November 2014.
