Records set for NZ Cup and Show Week

Record-breaking pre-event ticket sales have contributed to this year’s New Zealand Cup and Show Week being a resounding success, says Christchurch City Council Events Development Manager Richard Attwood.

The eight-day festival ended on Saturday and, while final attendance figures are not yet available, early indicators suggest this year’s festival has been a big hit with the public.

“It’s been an incredible week – there was a great vibe across the events and the weather stayed mostly fine, which encouraged people to come out in large numbers and enjoy themselves,’’ says Mr Attwood.

“All pre-event ticket sales for the main race days at Addington Raceway and Riccarton Park, as well as the Canterbury A&P Show, have been up on last year, which suggests that people are increasingly looking forward to the festival and the variety of events and entertainment on offer.”

Mr Attwood says this year’s festival has also been a big hit with hospitality and retail in the city, with a record number of restaurants, bars and shop owners aligning themselves with New Zealand Cup and Show Week.

“The festival has been an excellent showcase for many of Christchurch’s new establishments and attractions. It’s been great to see so many businesses get ‘dressed up’ and get behind the week’s events,” he says.

“It paints a very positive outlook for the future of New Zealand Cup and Show Week in Christchurch.”
