Updated proposal doesn’t fix Hawkes Bay Amalgamation

Updated proposal doesn’t fix fundamental issues with Hawkes Bay amalgamation

The Public Service Association (PSA) says today’s release of an updated proposal by the Local Government Commission doesn’t fix the underlying flaws in the amalgamation idea.

Willie Cochrane, PSA Hawkes Bay organiser, said “Our members working for councils across the Hawkes Bay know that amalgamation offers more risks than benefits,”

“The updated proposal from the Local Government Commission is merely tinkering that will not resolve the underlying issues.

“Our members working in local government have a range of concerns that the proposal fails to sufficiently address.

“Regional and rural services stand to be reduced in an amalgamated Hawkes Bay and this is not acceptable.

“Evidence is lacking that Hawkes Bay will see economic benefit from this proposal,” said Willie Cochrane.
