Final week to have your say on flood option

It’s the final week for residents to have a say on the Council’s preferred option to reduce the risk of flooding in the Flockton area.

Preferred Option 2 is expected to reduce the frequency and severity of flooding in the Flockton area and benefit at least 585 properties. Consultation closes at 5pm on Wednesday 26 November. The preferred option will return most of the Dudley Creek catchment to the same level of flood risk, or slightly better, than before the Canterbury Earthquakes.

“This is a very important project both for the Council and for communities and so we really want to hear from more Christchurch residents about what they think,” says General Manager Infrastructure Rebuild John Mackie.

We’ve already had some considered and comprehensive submissions, which is very helpful as decisions about where the work to protect against flooding takes place and what this work looks like will be informed by people’s feedback.

After considering residents’ feedback, alongside technical advice, the Council expects to make a final decision on 11 December 2014.

The preferred option requires the Council to purchase at least two properties along with partial purchase in a number of other locations. In all instances the Council will be talking with the directly affected property owners.

The Council is looking at naturalised banks, where possible, as an alternative to engineered walls. The Council would like to know if residents support this approach. Naturalised banks are visually appealing, with plants that fit a creek and stream environment, but they require more land.

The consultation booklet is available to view in any of the Council’s libraries and service centres. It is also available online at www.ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay. The final date for written comments is 5pm on Wednesday 26 November 2014.
