Honey House Café a hive of activity again
Honey House Café a hive of activity again
Kerikeri people are able to enjoy their favourite riverside café experience again this summer.
The Honey House Café – located immediately behind Kemp House in the Kerikeri Basin – is now up and running, and serving up the best of Kiwiana cuisine for locals and visitors alike.
“The Honey House Café is now run by the Kerikeri Mission Station team who have put their own unique stamp on the café menu, integrating the café with the rest of the visitor experience, and focusing on food that sounds all the right nostalgia notes,” says Heritage New Zealand’s Property Manager Liz Bigwood.
“The team are serving up classic New Zealand themed dishes – ranging from really good pies with tomato sauce and favourite biscuits and cakes like lamingtons, through to iconic classics like marmite and chippie sandwiches and even fairy bread for the kids. These and other hearty sandwiches and tasty salads made fresh will incorporate fruit and herbs grown in our award-winning garden whenever we can.”
The family-friendly holiday vibe also extends to having picnic rugs and cushions available so people can take their food and drinks outside and enjoy a riverside picnic.
“No Northland holiday would be complete without a picnic – and so we’ve made it as easy and convenient as possible,” she says.
Coffee aficionados will also be well catered for with Vivace supplying its premium blend of roast beans to the Honey House.
“Although new to Northland, cyclists on the Central Otago rail trail have been enjoying Vivace coffee for years at our sister property, Hayes Engineering, inland from Oamaru. Our trained baristas will be able to offer people the same experience here in Kerikeri,” says Liz.
“We’re also delighted to be able to offer Tip Top rolled ice-creams – the essence of summer – at an al fresco counter outside so people don’t have to come into the café – ideal for kids swimming at the Basin.”
With upgrades in the Basin now complete Liz is hoping fans of the Basin loop walk will make the Honey House Café their ‘local’, and that people will share the Honey House experience with visitors from out of town.
“People can also enjoy the fact that profits generated by the Honey House Café are supporting heritage – including ongoing maintenance and conservation of Kemp House and the Stone Store.”
The Honey House Café is open every day from 9.30am-4pm except for Christmas Day. The café is also available for private hire, and is ideal for family functions or work meetings in an idyllic setting.
