Regional Council wins most bike-friendly employer award

The Regional Council is delighted to have been recognised as Wellington’s most bike friendly employer in the annual Roll On Wellington cycle awards, says Greg Campbell, the Council’s Chief Executive.

“It’s great to see that the Regional Council, as an organisation that hugely supports and encourages cycling as a healthy and environmentally friendly means of transport, is recognised for practising what we preach. Nominations came from our staff who appreciate the facilities and support we provide for cyclists.

“We have fantastic bike facilities at our new offices at the Harbour Quays. More than 50 bikes can be accommodated in the shed and there’s an automatic door giving very easy access in and out. We have lockers, showers and changing rooms complete with ironing boards!

“We also have seven pool bikes that staff can book and use for running errands at lunchtime or going to meetings in the city, given that we are a bit of a hike away from the CBD.

“We offer cycle skills training as core training that staff can do during the working day. We regard this as a great opportunity to give staff the confidence and ability to travel safely by bike to meetings, saving on taxi fares, parking fees and petrol – and of course helping to reduce transport pollution.

“We also encourage staff to be healthy and active –cycling is a great way to get some exercise into your busy day and enjoy the Wellington wind rushing through your hair.”

Greg Campbell says he’s delighted that staff made time and effort to show their appreciation of the Regional Council’s facilities and support for cycling by nominating it for the award. “In the relatively short time I’ve been CEO, I can see that the Regional Council does go the extra mile to support its staff to take up active travel options and it’s really nice to see that they appreciate it.”

The Roll On Wellington cycle awards are held annually by Cycle Aware Wellington.
