Get summer DIY sorted with Hutt City Council

As the warmer weather approaches, Hutt City Council reminds residents to plan ahead for summer DIY projects.

Projects and renovations like adding in a swimming or spa pool, or building an addition onto your house, require Council consent and forward planning.

“DIY is a favourite pastime of many New Zealanders. Plenty of kiwis will be using their time off from work during summer to get stuck in to work around the house including renovations,” Divisional Manager Environmental Consents, Helen Oram says.

If you want to undertake work on your property, make sure you check with us about consent first.

Hutt City Council receives a lot of applications over the holiday period, so residents are strongly encouraged to complete applications for projects to be done during summer as soon as possible.

Work that requires consent includes;
• Structural - additions, alterations, re-piling, demolition.
• Plumbing and drainage.
• Relocating a building.
• Retaining walls higher than 1.5 metres or taking building/vehicle loading surcharge.
• Fences or walls higher than 2 metres and all pool fences.
• Swimming and spa pools.
• Decks, platforms or bridges more than 1.5 metres above ground level.
• Sheds greater than 10 square metres in floor area.
