Design of Beachville Road Pathway finalised

Design of Beachville Road section of Coastal Pathway finalised

The Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board has endorsed a final design for the Beachville Road/Redcliffs Park section of the Christchurch Coastal Pathway.

This follows feedback received by the Board from a community workshop held on 16 September 2014.

The workshop – which also considered 200 submissions from the local community - recommended six improvements to the Beachville Road/Redcliffs Park section of the pathway’s concept plan.

These were reported to the Board for proposed inclusion in the section.

They included removing cabbage trees from the design, keeping four carparks at the Beachville boat ramp for vehicles with boat trailers and having car parking along the Beachville Reserve area to ensure the same number of spaces as currently provided.

The proposed bike skills / scooter area adjacent to the coastal pathway on Beachville Reserve was also noted for inclusion.

At its meeting on 17 December 2014, the Board heard three deputations and received six items of correspondence regarding the Beachville Road report, including a deputation from the Christchurch Coastal Pathway Group.

The Board then resolved to endorse the final design that included the workshop feedback for the Beachville area as being consistent with the Christchurch Coastal Pathway Concept Plan approved by the Council.

“The Beachville section of the Coastal Pathway is going to be a wonderful area for families,” says the Chair of the Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board Sara Templeton.

“We have had great feedback from parents about having the bike and scooter skills park as part of the final design.

“Many parents used the OK Corral in Redcliffs for this before it moved and it will be well used by children learning to bike as Christchurch becomes a more cycle-friendly city,” says Mrs Templeton.

This decision means the final engineering design plans for the Beachville Section can now be completed.

In September the Council approved additional funding of $580,000 for the Beachville Road sea wall project to cover improvements raised earlier during the public notification of the Resource Consent
