Motorists urged to be patient with delays at Arthur’s Pass

Motorists are being advised of possible delays at Arthur’s Pass during the next three months as work progresses on the reconstruction and resealing of 600 metres of State Highway 73 west of the township.

The NZ Transport Agency’s Journey Manager Lee Wright says the highway is reduced to a single lane throughout the day – opened to two lanes at night - with the traffic controlled by lights.

“This is resulting in delays of about five minutes and we are asking motorists to be patient and not run the red light, as happened on a number of occasions in the last week. This has caused some issues when red-light runners have met traffic coming the other way.”

Works at Arthur’s Pass are scheduled to be completed early April.

Ms Wright says a number of resealing works will also be completed along the alpine section of SH73 during the first week of February and motorists are being asked to take extra care and observe any speed and lane restrictions.

“All other resealing work along the highway will be completed after the Coast-to-Coast event on 13 and 14 February. This programme of work will be weather dependent.”

She says motorists need to plan their journey and allow extra time.
