Longburn shared pathway to get funding

Palmerston North City Council are pleased at the announcement issued today from the Minister of Transport, confirming the Urban Cycleways Fund and the National Land Transport Fund will provide substantial capital funding for the Longburn to Palmerston North Shared Pathway.

Palmerston North City Council’s roading manager Graeme Tong said it is pleasing that $600,000 of the $900,000 project estimate has been funded by Central Governments Urban Cycleway Fund and NLTP. This contribution will allow PNCC to progress the shared pathway this financial year.”

The shared pathway will provide a safe passage for cyclists and pedestrians to use for leisure and commuting. It will run along the northern side of State Highway 56 from Works Road in Longburn to link with the existing path within the City boundary on Pioneer Highway.

The path, which includes a bridge over the Mangaone Stream on the northern side of the existing road bridge, will provide a useful off-road connection for commuting cyclists to and from Longburn.

“It’s really exciting to be adding this community connection to our network of paths across Palmerston North. The inclusion of off-road connections for active transport modes such as walking and cycling to and from the city will enable and encourage residents to adopt healthy modes of travel and leisure” says Graeme.
