Gallery To Remain Closed Until Completion
Media Statement
Ashburton Art Gallery
3 February 2015
Regarding the opening of The Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre building to be held on Saturday 14 February 2015, unfortunately due to ongoing issues with the climate control units of the new building, the Ashburton Art Gallery Inc has sadly no alternative but to remain closed until such time that the building is fully commissioned and fit for purpose.
With respect to the Ashburton District Council's plans to open the new building, we will make access available for guests to look through the empty exhibition spaces on February 14th between 1pm and 4pm, however the Gallery will remain closed at the conclusion of these formalities.
The Gallery has a responsibility to ensure that the building which will house the collection, along with loaned works of art is safe and meets the basic standards of our industry. It is very disappointing that the Gallery will not be part of the official opening in the way we had initially planned however we remain hopeful that the issues will be resolved soon. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this challenging time and look forward to welcoming the public into the new Gallery at our official opening function in the near future.
