Wellington bike party
Wellington bike party
Life is better by bike, is the message at this year's annual bike party on Go By Bike Day, 11 February.
“Biking is booming in Wellington,” says Cycle Aware Wellington chairman James Burgess. “Since 2006 the number of people commuting by bikes has doubled. New figures from WCC show that for the first time in decades bikes are 10 percent of traffic in some suburbs.”
He says people are rediscovering the simplicity and convenience of getting around by bike.
“Our city council is catching
up with public demand for decent cycling lanes, with a new
cycling masterplan and pledges of support from all
Councillors.”
“With the government investing another
$100 million in cycling, there has never been a better time
to build cycleways.”
He says a special guest at this year's event is a truck and driver.
“We'll bring an 18-wheeler truck to Go By Bike Day so people can try a driver's seat view, and see where the blind spots are."
“This year we'll also have a cargo bike race, demonstrating just what you can carry by bike.”
Go By Bike Day is run by Cycle Aware Wellington, supported by WCC and generous community sponsors.
