SCIRT traffic advice trips to Brighton this weekend, Moorhouse overbridge project starts 9 Feb, ICC Cricket next week

SCIRT traffic update, Waitangi weekend and week starting 9 February, 2015

Thanks to everyone who is taking care and slowing down around SCIRT work sites. The traffic controllers protect road users and the crews working on the piping and road work, so they appreciate drivers’ tolerance and friendly waves.

Busy on the way to Brighton this weekend

There is a sandcastle competition in New Brighton on Saturday so avoid delays by taking the South Brighton bridge, or take Dyers Road/ Anzac Drive to Pages Road or QEII Drive from the north. If you are closest to Pages Road, take Kerrs Road and Wainoni Road for the one-way beach-bound. Avoid the side streets off Pages Road if you can.

(Next weekend 13 and 14 February is the Coast to Coast finish over the weekend and party in New Brighton Friday night, so the same advice applies.)

BIG NEW PROJECT STARTING 9 February – MOORHOUSE AVE OVERBRIDGE

Moorhouse Ave overbridge (goes over the Colombo St intersection)

SCIRT’s Downer team will be starting this project in the week of 9 February, lasting 20 months. Drivers are asked to take care in the slip lanes, which are reduced to one lane, either side of the overbridge. However, traffic lanes will be largely unaffected initially on the overbridge itself and businesses will be open as usual. SCIRT will update any changes in traffic management as this work progresses in stages.

AREAS WHERE DRIVERS NEED TO TAKE SPECIAL CARE

Main Road Mt Pleasant hill-side of the Ferrymead bridge – watch for cyclists

Drivers need to take special care through this section of Main Road which is being converted to three-lanes, reducing the space available for cyclists and cars to share a lane while work is underway.

Fendalton Rd bridge/ Hagley Park north west corner – watch for cyclists

Repairs are underway on Fendalton Rd bridge, at the intersection of Fendalton Rd, Harper Ave and Deans Ave. Drivers need to let cyclists through safely where cars and cycles are merging. The footpath is also closed so pedestrians should follow the signage. Work is expected to be completed in mid-March.

This lucky critter was spotted earlier this week by Adrian Leckie in the bottom of a road cone, inverted over a hole to avoid anything, like hedgehogs, falling in. Adrian is working for Johnston Civil, subcontracted to McConnell Dowell, working on SCIRT’s Wairakei Diversion project, a big new wastewater pipe for the Christchurch City Council, currently being installed in Poynder Ave, Fendalton. Mrs Tiggy Winkle is now fossicking around the leafy gardens again.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_of_Mrs._Tiggy-Winkle

ICC Cricket World Cup travel advice – first game this Thursday

The Christchurch Transport Operations Centre (CTOC) is providing helpful maps and advice to get people to Hagley Park on time and avoid too much waiting on the key routes in and out of the city.

Park Terrace, between Bealey Ave and Dorset St, will be closed the day before (Wednesday, 11 February) from 9 am to midnight 12 February.

Riccarton Ave, running past Christchurch Hospital, should be avoided.
