Preliminary Mayoral By-election results announced

Grant Smith has been elected as the mayor of Palmerston North.

The preliminary result of the Palmerston North City Council mayoral by-election was announced by the Electoral Officer at 7pm, Tuesday 10 February.

Electoral officer, Dr John Annabell says eight iterations of the voting cycle took place.

The total voter turnout was 42.8 per cent. At the 2013 election voter turnout was 38.7 per cent.

Dr Annabell says the final result should be known on Thursday afternoon and advertised in the Manawatu Standard on Saturday.

The installation of the mayor will occur on Monday 16 February.

As the new mayor is a sitting Councillor, a by-election will be called following their resignation as a councillor. The earliest date a by-election can occur on isSaturday 9 May.
