Celebrate Holi Day At NorthTec

NorthTec’s Indian students will lead the celebrations for Holi Day, an ancient Hindu festival celebrating life through the use of colour.

Participants can prepare themselves to be covered in bright, vibrant powder paint and water, at the free event being held on Thursday, 5 March at the Apprentice Café on NorthTec’s Raumanga campus. The Holi Day paint-throwing celebrations, traditionally heralding the arrival of spring in India, are open to the community and will run from 11.30am to 3.30pm.

The event will open with prayers and welcome speeches, followed at 12pm by lunch, with traditional singing and dancing provided by NorthTec’s Indian students. Indian lunches catered by Whangarei’s Shiraz Restaurant will be available for $7 each; lunch tickets can be purchased from Shiraz or the NorthTec International Office.

From 2pm to 3.30pm the celebrations will be a riot of exuberance and colour, with participants smearing vivid powder paint on each other, and throwing water.

Holi Day is also known as the festival of colours or the festival of love, and celebrates the triumph of good over evil. It’s a day for breaking down social barriers and bringing people together to wish each other “Happy Holi”, and repairing broken relationships through forgiveness and joy.

Rachelle Eilering, NorthTec’s International Operations Manager, said: “Holi Day is often described as “the most colourful festival in the world”. We welcome members of the community to join in the fun – but they should be prepared to end up soaking wet and covered in paing."
