Prohibited fire status gets downgraded

Palmerston North City Council would like to notify residents that the rural fire season status has been downgraded from a prohibited to a restricted fire season.

The downgraded status will take effect from midnight Saturday 28th February 2015 and applies to Palmerston North City Council and all Department of Conservation land bordering onto this authority.

“There now appears to be a bit more moisture in the air and not as much wind to keep drying the vegetation out, which in turn means the risk of fire is slightly reduced,” Stewart Davies principal rural fire officer said.

Stewart said permits are still required for all fires in the open air except for barbecues lit in properly constructed containers and fuelled with gas or liquid fuel.

For all fire emergencies phone 111 and give your name, address, telephone number and rural number.

All permit requests or enquiries should be made to PNCC, Customer Service Centre or phone 356 8199.
