Film Screening Highlights Need for Abortion Law Reform

Rachel Rayner, from the Abortion Law Reform Association New Zealand reminds viewers at Auckland Women’s Centre’s premiere of ‘Vessel’, that abortion is still a crime in New Zealand.

‘Vessel’, screening for the first time in New Zealand on Sunday, the 22nd of March at the Capitol Cinema, tells the story of fierce feminist Rebecca Gomperts and her vision to challenge anti-abortion laws worldwide.

‘Vessel’ follows the creation of ‘Women on Waves’, an underground network of emboldened, informed feminists working at the cutting edge of global reproductive rights.

Rayner will be discussing the question raised by Gomperts herself; “Do women have the basic human right to be able to decide what is happening with their own bodies?”

This gripping documentary highlights the need for abortion law reform in New Zealand, with Rayner reminding viewers how far there is to go.

There is a resurgence of women in New Zealand campaigning for their rights and women’s reproductive rights are an important part of this agenda.
