In April, Orchestra Wellington roars back into the concert hall with a season of Russian classics that is proving highly popular with audiences. Pre-sales of subscriptions have been extremely successful, says Orchestra Wellington's general manager Adan Tijerina.
"In fact it's our best ever subscription drive, by a long shot," says Tijerina.
It might be due to the orchestra's innovative new pricing. Subscribers were quick to seize on a deal that made a six-concert package cheaper than buying two single tickets.
"We want to ensure that the arts, that fine art music like ours, remains accessible," Tijerina says." Sometimes we look around at who comes to the concert hall, and it's not quite where it should be. People should be able to come and hear what we do, which is awesome. It's that simple."
The orchestra offers $25 tickets to people under 35. Many in this age bracket are starting off their careers and facing the financial demands of child-rearing while paying off student loans. Add the cost of babysitters to that, and a night out quickly becomes unaffordable.
Ticket prices are also strikingly low for people who hold a community services card. They pay $12, in line with the ticket price for students. Only children pay less at $10.
In 2015 Orchestra Wellington will perform all of the Tchaikovsky Symphonies. These are among the most beloved and popular of all symphonies and, taken as a whole, form one of the most important and lasting monuments of the Romantic era.
