Walking and cycling about to get better on Carlton Gore Road
Walking and cycling is about to get better on Carlton Gore Road
Auckland Transport is installing cycle lanes on Carlton Gore Road, between Park Road and Davis Crescent. From 2 April, works begin on the lanes which will expand the Auckland Cycle Network, making it easier and safer to access Newmarket by bike.
Auckland Transport’s Walking and Cycling Manager, Kathryn King, says “The cycle lanes will provide an improved connection from the east into the city centre and an alternative to cycling on the busier Khyber Pass Road.” People on bikes will be separated from traffic by a half-metre painted buffer and west of George Street raised kerbs will give riders additional protection.
The works have been timed to coincide with school holidays, when traffic volumes are lighter. Completion of all improvements is expected by the end of June, weather permitting.
The new bike lanes have been integrated into a wider programme of improvements to the street, designed to make it easier and safer to get around on Carlton Gore Road.
The road will be resurfaced and footpaths replaced on both sides of the road, between Park Road and George Street and a shared area created at the entrance to Auckland Domain. A drinking fountain within this area will provide a spot to pause and refuel.
A raised table installed across George Street, where it intersects with Football Road and Carlton Gore Road, will calm traffic and give greater visibility to pedestrians. Anti-skid coloured surfacing will be added to the approaches of both the existing zebra crossing near Morgan Street and a new zebra crossing to be installed just east of George Street.
Kathryn King says “These improvements will make it easier to walk and cycle around Carlton Gore Road. Making the area safer and more accessible will increase its desirability as a place in which to live, work and shop.”
Creating separated space for cars and bikes on Carlton Gore Road has been achieved by reorganising how the road is used. Some on-street parking will be removed to create space for bike lanes and the introduction of an evening clearway west of George Street will help to keep the street moving. Metered parking will encourage turnover of parking spaces so that visitors can easily find a spot.
Kathryn King thanks the community for feedback regarding the improvements, “We’ve listened to your comments and have made a number of design changes as a result.”
