Regional Council is opening its community grants programme
early this year in order to encourage community groups
completing planting projects throughout the Region to
apply.
The programme, which funded 16 projects in the
last round, aims to support community groups, schools, early
childhood centres and iwi/hapu groups with projects that
enhance the Region and encourage more people to engage with
the natural environment. $20,000 is up for grabs, with the
council receiving requests totaling over $75,000 in
2014.
“Every year the number of applications
increase but we’ve noticed we’re missing the window for
planting projects,” says media and communications manager,
Kate Ritani.
“As optimal planting time is May-August
we have decided to open this round on 30 March in order to
attract groups who are looking to undertake some awesome
planting projects. We are also looking for a variety of
other projects and in the past have supported wetland
regeneration, track works and dune
stabilisation.”
Horizons environment committee chair Colleen Sheldon believes the programme is a great way for Horizons to support community groups who are enhancing their area of the Region.
“Sometimes all these groups need is a little support from us to enable their projects to get underway,” says Ms Sheldon.
“Our staff are also available to provide advice and expertise on projects so maximum benefit is achieved from the funding received.”
The closing date for community grants applications is Friday 8 May. For further information please visit www.horizons.govt.nz or phone Horizons on 0508 800 800.
