Auckland lights up to celebrate ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Semi Final
Auckland will be awash in light on Tuesday,
24 March to celebrate the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Semi
Final at Eden Park.
The match signals the end of the tournament in New Zealand and to celebrate Auckland is putting on a light and firework display.
Auckland Museum will be lit up in team colours alongside the Sky Tower, which will be the site of a fireworks display to mark the occasion. The Fanzone at Takutai Square will also light up to join the celebrations.
Near the stadium there will be additional entertainment and performers adding to the atmosphere for fans heading to the match.
Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) Chief Executive, Brett O’Riley, says the display is a fitting way to signal the tournament coming to an end in New Zealand.
“Auckland has enjoyed a massive programme of events over the last few months, with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 being a real highlight of what has been a non-stop summer.
“Aucklanders have really got behind this tournament and there have been some amazing matches played at Eden Park. The atmosphere at the games has been electric and it’s fitting that we farewell the tournament in a similar fashion.”
ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Head of New Zealand Therese Walsh says organisers are delighted with the way Kiwi fans and families have got behind the tournament’s return to New Zealand after 23 years.
“We can now look forward to the last of New Zealand’s 23 matches in front of a capacity crowd at Eden Park. Whether you’re lucky enough to have a ticket or will be enjoying the game at the ICC Cricket World Cup Fanzone, at home or in the office, it's going to be something special.”
“These are the kind of moments people will be talking about when people look back on this tournament in years to come.”
The Fanzone in Takutai Square, Britomart will remain open for the remaining Semi Final being played in Sydney on26 March, and the Final being played in Melbourne on 29 March. The Fanzone will be extended for the Final, with a second big screen being put in place.
