Queenstown CBD Litter Trial Extended

A trial rubbish and recycling collection system in central Queenstown is being extended until the beginning of August so the Council can fully assess its impact on businesses and contractors, and get feedback from CBD users.

The trial began just before Christmas and was originally to have finished at the end of March, Regulatory Manager Lee Webster said.

Under the new system, businesses take their blue rubbish bags and bundles of cardboard to 11 centralised collection points twice a day, leaving the footpaths uncluttered by refuse.

“From what we’ve seen, the CBD is looking cleaner now, and compliance with the new system has been very good,” Mr Webster said. “From the Council’s perspective, the trial has been a success and could be made a permanent arrangement. But before we make that recommendation, we want to hear what the Queenstown business community has to say about how it’s worked for them. We also need to have discussions with our contractors AllWaste and Smart Environmental to see whether we need to change the terms of our rubbish and recycling collection contracts.”

Mr Webster said the Council would survey central Queenstown businesses between now and July to canvas their views. A question on the cleanliness of the CBD would also be included in this year’s Residents and Ratepayer perception survey, to see whether visitors and the wider community felt the streets were cleaner.
